Demand For Speech Therapists Versus Availability Causing Crisis For The Florida Schools

With the passing of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act, schools across the nation are now required to offer services that were before considered a luxury for students with disabilities. One such service is for speech and language therapy.

In a memorandum to all Florida schools special education directors, Chief of Exceptional Education Bambi Lockman wrote that federal officials found that the Florida schools had failed to provide speech and language-related services to children with disabilities. She further noted that the officials stated that these services were necessary as outlined by the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act, without which the children could not fully benefit from their special education.

Speech and language therapists help children who have trouble pronouncing words due to physical disabilities, such as a cleft palate, autism, or hearing impairments. Other children have problems expressing themselves, and some children cannot speak at all. Therapists help these children overcome a wide range of obstacles that interfere with their ability to learn.

Throughout the Florida schools there are nearly 93,000 children who are considered speech or language impaired. That is 18 percent of all Florida schools students. Under the disabilities act, other students also will qualify for speech and language services, such as those children who are learning English as a second language. The demand for therapists by the Florida schools already is greater than the availability of such professionals, and officials expect that demand to grow even more once services are more readily offered.

Speech and language therapists have been in short supply in the Florida schools, as well as across the United States, for many years. Experts blame the shortage on the increasing demands for therapists by school districts across the nation and the considerably low pay offered, compared to the amount of education, certification and licensing required by the schools.

The Florida schools Palm Beach County School District has gone beyond the federal requirements and will have an even higher demand for therapist services. They developed a plan that offers extra speech and language services to all of their elementary-level students with disabilities.

With language and speech playing a crucial role in a students development and the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act requiring the Florida schools to provide such services, therapists are much in demand and the shortage is even greater. This means that until the Florida schools can hire all of the needed therapists, the services offered will be limited to how many therapists each school district can manage to hire.

Really understand these key issues. The funding companies are checking you out as much as the numbers relating to the deal.

Dont ask for too little or too much

If you really understand your business to the level that a funding company would like then you would get the request for money correct the first time you ask. Its embarrassing if you get the figures wrong.

Write out a cashflow forecast for your proposition.

Remember that the greatest gap between revenue and overhead costs may not be month 1 or 2, it may be 8 months down the line.

A typical cycle for raising finance may take 2 to 18 months. If you run out of cash in month 9 and youre 5 months from the next injection of funding then you may not survive the year. Too much funding is equally embarrassing. What will the perception be of a company asking for funding who were wildly out on figures the last time around?

Poetry is an esoteric art isnt it? Theres no point in getting caught up in base things like publishing or pandering to an audience its only the work that matters, right? Wrong. Writing superbly crafted works of art full of gorgeous rhythms and intense insights is a magnificent thing to do for oneself, but if these works arent shared with others, they will disappear into the vacuum of our certain death without trace. Of course there is always the chance that, like Emily Dickenson, your masterpieces will be found in the desk drawer post-mortem, but the chance is higher that if and when they are found, they wont be that good, since you wont have gone through the wonderfully stringent process of refining, grouping, and structuring that publication involves, not to mention the opportunity of working with a professional editor. The poet has a responsibility not only to his or her art, but to the world, to publish, and to have publication as an end goal for the work.

Thats easy to say, but how do you get your poetry published as a collection? Getting a chapbook or full length poetry book published isnt easy, but it isnt that hard either. Because small collections like chapbooks are cheap to produce and often have a small price tag, it isnt all that difficult to sell them either. There are a few tricks though.

When I saw a publisher calling for sports poetry, I wrote a couple of swim poems, and then sent them a query with those poems, asking if they would be interested a book which involved me interviewing professional sportspeople and then writing an original poem for each sport to go with the interview. I havent heard back from them as yet, but its a concept that could work for any publisher, on any topic. Just find a call for submissions on a specific concept and build a query or series of poems around that. Another publisher friendly theme is to write about where you live, and submit the work to a local publisher. There are probably a lot of poems about Paris or New York, but what about Morebath, or Poughkeepsie? Youre sure to find something historically interesting, and the local council and libraries will probably buy up your first print. Periods in history are also good. I read a wonderful book of poetry based on Walt Whitmans Civil War Years -- Karen Knights Under the One Granite Roof. Pick a period in your own history and write a series of poems around that topic. The possibilities are limitless, and its so much easier to let your creative flow rip when youve got a theme to work to. Finding a publisher is also much easier, as the market for your work will be ready made.

Get Out There. Or get your work out there. Go to poetry slams; read your work, talk about your work, network. One of the nice things about publishing poetry is that pre-published poems are much more likely to be accepted in a collection than poems that havent been published, so you can submit each poem immediately when you finish writing it, even as you are pulling poems together into a collection. Publishers of collections prefer poetry that has already been published. You get double benefits for your work, and increase your odds of getting a collection published every time you publish a poem. Publishers are much more likely to take on your book if they recognise your name, so make sure your name is being bandied about.

Create a Market Database Research the different poetry publishers and create a little database of those that are likely to be right for your work. Build your manuscript to their requirements and once its ready, following their guidelines to the letter and submit your queries. Does this sound basic? It is! Local Writers Market yearbooks are excellent sources of publishers and guidelines as is the Internet just do a Google search on poetry publishers (and watch out for the many sharksnever pay to have your work read, or published and be especially careful about anthologies!). Just remember that most legitimate poetry publishers are small and wont be offering advances, or big margins on your work. Nor are they likely to have a big publicity budget youll have to do all that yourself, which is where your experience at reading will come in handy. One of the many upsides of being with a small house is that you get a lot more attention editorially (and the whole process of having your poetry edited is well worth the trouble of being published it will make you a better writer). There also isnt the dramatic time pressure that you get with a large house. You can expect to continue selling your book for years, rather than months, and since most small publishers use POD (print on demand) technology, you dont have to fear the dreaded pulping machine.

If all else fails (and even if it doesnt), you can always self-publish. Get a good book, like Peter Bowermans The Well Fed Self-Publisher and do your own thing. Again, chapbooks are inexpensive to produce (most are around 32 pages) and can be done primarily with a good computer and colour printer and if you keep your costs down and use an easy payment system like PayPal, you might even make some decent money along with your good name. Two key points with self-publishing dont sacrifice the editing step good editing can make or break a collection and a badly edited collection wont do your name any good at all. Hire someone to knock your good poems into great poems and help with the ordering, structuring and linguistic power. The learning curve is a bonus, since a good editor will most certainly improve your writing for future collections. Dont sacrifice quality either get good paper, good staplers, a beautiful cover, or use a good printer to get a nice looking collection. You will certainly be judged by the look, and feel of the collection, so the output is something you shouldnt skimp on.

Thats it. Dont let a fear of failure stop you. The only way to publish a collection of poetry is to set a goal and work towards it, at whatever pace your schedule allows. Poetry is particularly suited to this method, as it doesnt take that long to write a single poem and the satisfaction of completion comes regularly as youre building the collection. Good luck!

Mental Skills in Business: The 7 Key Rules of the Mental Road (Part 1 of 2)

Why is it that in some situations, our personal performance is so good while in others we struggle and cannot seem to get into the groove where we do our best work? Is it because we forget, from one day to the next, the important details of our profession or what it takes to excel? Of course we all know that this is not the reason we sometimes follow up a great personal performance with one that leaves something to be desired. The answer to these questions lies more in the inconsistent application of basic mental skills that underlie our ability to perform whether the performance is in the boardroom, on the sales floor, or on the golf course!

In order to provide a simple frame of reference to help our high-performance clients understand how the human mind works and how it can be made to work for us (as opposed to against us) in high-stress, competitive situations, I have created a set of simple Rules that I have called "The Rules of the Mental Road". These key Rules serve as the backbone of the educational process that ultimately yields the development of a mental training process we call the A.C.T. Model © - a practical set of mental tools' that you can utilize to shape your thinking so that you can perform to the best of your ability when called upon to toe the line.

RULE #1 STATES: If you want to climb out of a hole, the very first thing you must do is stop digging

Sometimes we dig ourselves into a mental hole' by thinking negative thoughts, constantly reviewing and repackaging them in our mind and sharing them with others who are only too happy to reinforce those negative thoughts. If you want to shift your mindset from negative thoughts to positive and productive thinking, you first must choose to process only positive and productive thoughts. If you do not stop digging, you will not be able to shift your dominant thought to the kind of positive and productive thinking you need to turn yourself around and climb out of the hole. It does not matter what the nature of the negative thoughts might be, the first Rule of the Mental Road applies. Some examples:

- Increased responsibilities that seem to deny you the opportunity to focus effectively on anything
- Deadlines you feel are unrealistic
- Expectations you feel are unfair
- Sales quotas you worry about
- Monthly numbers you are told you must reach in order to guarantee bonus compensation or worse yet, maintain your job
- Problems at home

If you allow yourself to be caught in a negative loop, worrying about things that are not relevant to the act of performing in the moment' your performance will not be optimal. Rule #2 helps us to understand why

RULE #2 AFFIRMS: The Mind Can Only Process One Thought at a Time...

The human brain is capable of millions of computations each second but our mind can only process this information one piece at a time. The mind is not capable of processing two thoughts at the same time! Try the following simple test as a way to demonstrate to yourself the truth of this basic tenet.

The task I would like you to undertake involves counting backwards by 3s out loud, starting from the number 100. While you are doing this, have a friend ask you to solve a simple mathematical question (2x3 for example). Ready begin: 100, 97, 94

Interesting isn't it? If you actually tried to complete this little exercise, you will likely already have realized that the only way you can solve the mathematical problem is if you shift your focus of attention from the task of counting backwards, process what you heard the equation compute and give the answer, and only then shift back to the first task, once the mathematical question has been resolved. This shift does not take long but undeniably, it does occur.

If you truly could process two mental tasks at the same time, you should be able to continue to process the task of counting backwards without interruption while simultaneously processing and computing the solution to the math question. Would it surprise you to find out that nobody can? Many people believe that they can process two thoughts at the same time, but in practical terms they cannot. What happens is that we switch back-and-forth between different thoughts, albeit very quickly indeed sometimes, but still it is a process of shifting one's focus of attention from one thought to another. But what is the impact of Rule #2 on personal performance?

Simply put, if your mind is only able to process one thought at a time, it cannot process a different thought at the same time. The implications of this Rule on performance are significant.

If you take a moment to think back to the performances in your life that you would categorize as being amongst your best ever', it is likely that you would report having possessed a single-minded focus directed specifically to the task in which you were involvedwhere your mind was fully absorbed in the process of what you were doing. This process-focused, undistracted, here-and-now' mindset is a common theme reported by many high-performers at the moment of their most brilliant performances, whether it is in the arts, in sport, in business, or whatever. Some people call it "Being in the Zone".

With Rule #2 in mind, what would the consequence of focusing on something other than what is required at that very moment, to perform to the best of your ability? For example:

- Worrying about how you are being perceived by others or perhaps fearing that you are not performing up to someone else's expectations;
- Being focused on the results or the outcome of the activity (the negotiation, the sales pitch, the presentation)which may perhaps even be hours away;
- Distracted by some unrelated thought that is not directly beneficial or relevant to your performance at that very moment; and so on.

The consequence is that, if your mind is occupied processing thoughts that are not related to your performance, it cannot be focused on the process of performing at the same time in the moment and it is likely that your performance will not be as good as it could be. Rule #2 serves as the foundation on which the next 3 Rules of the Mental Road are built.

RULE #3 STATES: You Cannot NOT Think About What is On Your Mind...

So often, we pre-program ourselves for failure by expressing things negatively and thinking about them in the negative

- "Don't get nervous. There is nothing to be nervous about"
- "When you are up on stage Billy, don't focus on the crowd"
- "Whatever you do, don't slice the ball into that rough on the right side of the fairway"

Because the mind cannot act positively in response to a negative thought, by expressing things in the negative (whether you state them out loud or simply process them in your mind) you make it easier for your mind to focus on exactly what you did not want to do exactly the way you pictured it in your mind! The second Rule of the Mental Road affirms that you cannot NOT think about what is on your mind.

Here is another little exercise to help drive the point home. Take a moment to understand clearly the following instruction: I DO NOT want you to think about the thing that I will describe for you now. I do not want you to picture in your mind's eye:

A BIG PINK ELEPHANT
Wearing PURPLE BOXER SHORTS
With BIG YELLOW DOTS on them

It's tough to do isn't it? The only way you would not see the image of the Pink Elephant in your mind's eye is if you had relied on Rule #2, that is to say that you set your mind intently on processing something else, another image that grabbed your attention fully while you read through the boldfaced lines above. The vast majority of people picture that strange Pink Elephant in all its gloryeven though they understand the explicit instruction I gave not to do so. What is the impact of Rule #3 on your personal performance?

Rule #3 affirms that the harder you try NOT to think about something, the more strength that thought and its associated images gainto become firmly entrenched in your mind. You must learn to phrase' things (and picture them) in your mind in positive terms, describing to yourself how you want to think and feel while you successfully accomplish the task that you are focused on, rather than what you do not want to do.

Since you cannot NOT think about what is on your mind and because you can process only one thought at a time, you must ensure that the thoughts you choose to process while performing are associated with the act and process of performing, picturing in your mind's eye what you want to do, how you want to do it and how it feels when you do it that way.

By now I'm sure you have realized that affiliate marketing is one of the most effective and powerful ways is of earning some money online. Affiliate programs give everybody a chance to make a profit through the Internet. Since they are easy to join, implement and pay a commission on a regular basis, more an more people are now willing in this business.

But like with all businesses, there are countless pitfalls in the affiliate marketing business as well. Making some of the most common mistakes will result in decreasing everyday profits for the marketers. That is why you should avoid them now than be regretful in the later.

First Mistake: Selecting the wrong affiliate program.

Logically, many people want to earn affiliate marketing commission as fast as possible. By rushing through the selection stage, they tend to choose a bandwagon product. In many cases, this is not a very wise move obviously.

Second mistake: Not buying the product or using the service.

When you decide to be an affiliate, your main purpose is to effectively and convincingly promote a product or service and to find customers. For you to achieve this purpose, you must be able to relay that certain product and service to the customers. It may be difficult for you to do this when you yourself have not tried these things out. Thus, you probably will fail to promote and recommend them convincingly. You will also fail to create a desire in your customers to avail any of what you are offering.

The best thing to do is to try the product or service personally first before you sign up as an affiliate to see if it is really delivering what it promises. After you have done this, you are one of the credible and satisfied customers aware of it's advantages and disadvantages. People will then feel the sincerity and truthfulness in you and this will trigger them to try them out for themselves.

Mistake number 3: Joining too many affiliate programs.

Because affiliate programs are very easy to join, you might feel the temptation to join various affiliate programs to try and maximize the commissions you will be getting. You also may think that there is nothing wrong and nothing to lose by being part of many affiliate programs.

This may be true, it is a great way to have multiple sources of income. However, joining multiple programs and attempting to promote them all at the same time will cause you to sabotage yourself. It will prevent you from concentrating on each one of them properly.

The result? The true potential of your affiliate program is not reached and the income generated will not be as generous as you initially thought it would. The best way to achieve excellent result is by joining only one solid program that pays a 40% commission at least. Give it your best effort by promoting the product or service enthusiastically. As soon as you see that it is already making a reasonable profit, then maybe you can now join another affiliate program.

The best technique is to do it slowly but surely. There is really no need to rush into anything, especially with affiliate marketing. With the way things are going, the future is looking real bright and it seems affiliate marketing will be around for a long time.

A lot of affiliate marketers makes these mistakes and are paying dearly for their actions. Do not fall into the same situation they have been in, try to do whatever possible to avoid making the same mistakes.

Making Your Resource Box ... Work!

I see many free reprint articles where the author is missing out on countless high quality visitors simply because their resource box at the end of the article is not constructed effectively. This article will give you three main check points to ensure your resource box is always working to its maximum efficiency.

1. Ask Them To Click.

Seems very simple doesn't it? But it really is that simple. Unless you ask the reader to click on the link you have presented to them, they often just won't.

Of course you don't need to use language as direct as 'Click here' as this can often put the reader on the defensive whereas you are looking for a cooperative mindset where they click through because they want to. You can do it in a very subtle way, while still guiding the reader into clicking the link.

In fact, you have to tell them exactly why they should click the link.

For example, I often use an arrow before the link ("=>"), and use phrases such as "For further information, go to ...", or "Find out why ... at ...".

To illustrate the point, the following resource box offers no incentive whatsoever for the reader to click the link:

"Steve Shaw develops systems and software to help you succeed in your online business.
[link here]"

By editing it in a simple way you can significantly increase the number of click-throughs:

"Steve Shaw develops systems and software to help you succeed in your online business. Find out more about how to publish articles for profit online with his popular free ecourse, available at:
=> [link here]"

You can see immediately that you would be far more likely to click the link in the second version of the resource box. Why?

- You can find out more about a topic you are interested in.
- It's 'popular', which plays on the herd instinct.
- It's free - you are not expected to commit to or pay anything.

So, three reasons why you would be more likely to click through on the link.

2. Relate it to the article.

I see many resource boxes that bear little relation to the content of the article, and unfortunately for the author, they are not going to maximize their results from the time they spent writing the article.

The content of the article is what attracts readers to it, i.e. you have a targeted readership based on it's content. The resource box should then play to this interest in order to encourage them to click through on the link. Otherwise, you lose the interest of the readership - they may have enjoyed your article, but you get nothing back in return.

This means in turn that the content of your article should relate to the content of the web site that you want to link to in the resource box.

As a simple example, if you write an article on fishing, the readers of the article will quite obviously be highly targeted for fishing. If your resource box then asks you to click through to a site about stamp collecting, you're playing on a chance that those interested in fishing will also be interested in stamp collecting, and you can bet it will be a very small minority.

You needed to write about stamp collecting in the first place so that the resource box was relevant.

You also need to relate the resource box directly to the content of the article, so that clicking through is a natural follow on to the content of the article. So use phrases such as "For more information", "To find out more", and so on.

3. Use A Single Link.

Too many authors use more than one link in the resource box, and this simply dilutes the effectiveness of having a single link. You don't have the space in a resource box to provide encouragement to the reader to click through on more than one link, and by providing more than one you can simply confuse the reader, i.e. there is no natural follow-on link to click after reading the article, so they will often not click at all and go elsewhere.

Many authors simply list two or three links in the resource box, which I consider a fairly pointless exercise.

Instead, stick to one, and focus all your efforts towards encouraging the reader to click this link. For maximum effectiveness, avoid hyped up or promotional language; just offer them further information that will be of interest to them.

Of course you can see below my own example of a resource box that utilizes all three points above. And by asking visitors to sign up to an email list, I don't just get a single click-through and then lose the visitor for ever, but build up the repeat visitors that are the life blood of any business.

Demystifying Googles New Patent

On August 22, 2006, Googles latest patent (#7096214) was approved. This patent is extremely interesting in light of the recent excitement surrounding social search. The patent if broken down into its most simplistic form states, Google is going to take their existing algorithm and temper it with shared book marking sites and other trust networks.

The Patent itself is called, System and method for supporting editorial opinion in the ranking of search results. What does this all mean? If your web site has gained and lost significant ranking over the past month, it is very likely due to your inclusion or not in trust networks, such as links from www.myspace.com, http://del.icio.us, Google Co-op and others. Though the patent does not go into detail on which sites are trusted sites and which are not, it is likely that the trusted sites are the ones that are being talked about heavily with in the social networking arena.

It is also important to note, that just having a patent approved does not necessarily mean that you must use the patent. This seems to implicate that a web site which is listed on a favored site, and has solid editorial opinions will rank higher than a site which is not referenced by the favored or non-favored sites, even if it is still keyword dense, has great titles and all other factors that has been used in the past to rank a site.

In the next few claims the patent backs up claim #3, by stating the editorial opinions cause the rank of those web sites, Flash movies, images etc. that correspond to favored sites to be increased while those corresponding to non-favored sites will be decreased. Claim #10 goes on to restate how Google will score a web site based on its relationship to a favored or non favored web site and if so, that the ranking will be further fine tuned by an editorial opinion of those favored sites.

The statements about these favored and non-favored sites as well as editorial opinions leads one to believe that Google is simply referring to good and bad neighborhoods, which have been used in the past. The editorial opinions leads one to believe Google is looking for specific positive or negative content on shared book marking sites and human reviewed directory sites such as Myspace. What An Illness Can Teach You

The first part of our lives, we come to learn the ways of the world.

The second part is spent unlearning.

Some of us are faster learners than others, and unlearners. The trick is to remember the unlearning because if you don't, you get stuck in delusion.

For instance, I'll use the example of illness, one of the Big Ones.

We learn early on to have an aversion to getting sick.

Yet we may get more attention, people take care of us, we may get to stay by ourselves to contemplate the delirious thoughts rumbling round and round in our heads.

Most recently, I was in bed with a fever of 103 degrees. I used "The Work" of Byron Katie and Ho'oponopono to heal my thoughts about the illness.

Ho'oponopono is an ancient Hawaiian healing technique that simply requires the inner chanting of four phrases: I love you, Thank you, Please forgive me, (for the part I played in bringing about this "problem"), I am sorry (for the part I played).

Byron Katie's "The Work" is a process where a "problem" is scrutinized with Inquiry, or a series of questions, that puts the responsibility right back where it belongs--inside yourself.

I'd just be lying here saying: Thank you body, thank you fever;

I love you body, I love you fever; I'm sorry and forgive me for the part I played in bringing about this illness.

Turn it around?

I don't feel terrible.

I feel enlivened.

I feel like the inner fire of the fever is changing me forever.

I feel like the fever is the gateway to transformation.

I feel like the fever gave me this opportunity to spontaneously use "The Work" without even trying to use it and that "The Work" was using me.

Ho'oponopono effortlessly flowed through me like music to my soul.

I was sick a few days after that, but didn't complain to people about my illness, didn't want to, thus did not create a story that would make people say, "Poor you."
